Design of a centre for marine animal farming and research
Aquaculture is a term which you may not be familiar with. Fish form part of our diet for most of us, but the global fishing industry has brought man close to the limits of our renewable resources.
We participated in designing the first central European centre for research and farming of endangered marine species similar to the Mote Laboratory in the USA. One of the most flexible ways of arranging the facility in an irregular shaped area proved to be a cellular system with a hexagonal matrix. The inspiration for this system was drawn from basalt formations on the coast of Northern Ireland. This complex also includes a visitors and educational centre.
